According to the 1916 History of Clinch County the town was first settled around 1856 as Lawton, but was renamed in 1874 after J. P. A. DuPont, an early settler. It was incorporated as a city in 1889.

There were 57 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were married couples
living together, 17.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the town the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.
