, Hontiveros studied and honed his basketball skills in his home province. Just like any accomplished athlete, success did not come easy for him. In fact his initial foray into basketball was greeted with heartbreak and disappointment.

He fancied basketball at a young age and tried to enter the sport at a competitive level in his first year of high school. But at that time, since he lacked the height, no one took notice of the young Dondon. Fortunately, the young Dondon had a growth spurt by the time he was in 3rd year so he was taken into the high school basketball team of Don Bosco Tech.

At last, they started to take notice, although his first year as a member of the team was spent mostly on the bench. By the time Dondon became a high school senior, he was already a regular on the team. At this point, he was already as tall as the team’s center. Hontiveros’ jump to the next level – college basketball – suffered a minor setback when he ended his senior high school year with an injury.

To keep himself competitive, he played in the intramurals at University of San Jose-Recoletos. Dondon eventually played college ball at the University of Cebu

franchise finally and eventually acquired him through a trade. Soon, Dondon found himself a vital cog in the team’s offensive rotation. He was quickly promoted as a starter for the team.He was also a member of the two championship won by San Miguel Beermen in 2004-2005 Fiesta Conference and the 2009 Fiesta Conference.

Even if followers of Dondon’s career can safely say that he has arrived, this 6'2 Cebuano has shown that he has transcended success.

On March 2011 Danny Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros, Dorian Pena and Paul Artadi were shipped to Air21 for much younger players Rabah Al Husseni, Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra.

Hontiveros emerged as one of the key players during his stint with the Express. He was the highest scoring local. He once contributed 18 points in their final elimination game which they won against the Alaska Aces, 92-83. The win sealed The Express' 4 game winning streak, enroute to clinching the last spot for a quarterfinals seat. The Express thus finished the 36th PBA Commissioner's Cup with a 5-4 win-loss record considering that they started with 1-4 record earlier in the tournament. However, they were not able to repeat the success during the 2011 PBA Governors Cup

after the team compiled a winless 0-9 record at the eliminations.

In the 2011 PBA DRAFT, Dondon Goes back to Petron (San Miguel) as a part of a trade. In the deal,Petron will receive Hontiveros and Center Carlo Sharma, with the no.3 pick SMART-GILAS swingman Chris Lutz.

In turn, Barako Bull received veteran center Mick Pennisi, sharpshooter Sunday Salvacion, and the rights to the No. 8 pick, which it used on PBA D-League Most Valuable Player Allein Maliksi.

The team also received a 2014 first round draft pick from the Boosters and a future second round pick.

He also played in the RP-Team in 2002, 2007 and was also playing with Smart-Gilas Team Pilipinas in 2011 Jones Cup.
