, then part of the Captaincy of Pernambuco, around 1600. He was baptized in the Catholic faith on March 15, 1610. He was a mulato; however, several chroniclers qualify him as mameluco and not mulatto. He studied with the Jesuits, and made money from smuggling. He came to become master of lands and mills.
