Most of the township lies within the Manistee National Forest. The Manistee River
runs through the eastern and souther portions, with the Tippy Dam forming the Tippy Dam Pond along the south-central boundary.
, the township has a total area of 71.7 square miles (185.7 km²), of which, 70.1 square miles (181.6 km²) of it is land and 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²) of it (2.29%) is water.

was 13.3 per square mile (5.1/km²). There were 660 housing units at an average density of 9.4 per square mile (3.6/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.88% White, 0.22% African American, 1.08% Native American, 0.11% Asian, and 1.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.05% of the population.
There were 364 households out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were married couples
living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 22.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the township the population was spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 30.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 103.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.7 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $33,309, and the median income for a family was $34,545. Males had a median income of $27,656 versus $20,781 for females. The per capita income
