Desktop notes are computer applications that allow putting Post-it note-like windows on the screen, with reminders, short notes and other clippings. They are typically rectangular and yellow, like their real-world counterpart, but most applications support other colours and more elaborate designs.
The original desktop note application is Stickies, which was developed for the Macintosh by Jens Alfke and included by Apple in System 7.

Desktop notes are computer applications that allow putting Post-it note-like windows on the screen, with reminders, short notes and other clippings. They are typically rectangular and yellow, like their real-world counterpart, but most applications support other colours and more elaborate designs.
The original desktop note application is Stickies, which was developed for the Macintosh by Jens Alfke and included by Apple in System 7. A number of applications have duplicated the functionality of Stickies on other platforms, such as the Microsoft Windows-based minimalist Desktop Notes and advanced Power Notes, as well as Microsoft Outlook and, more recently, the fully-featured client OneNote (although this offers more general note taking than virtual desktop notes). Also in Microsoft's latest operating system Windows Vista there is gadget called Notes which is to be used with Windows Sidebar. As Microsoft states in its description, "Notes" can be used to "Capture ideas, notes and remainders in a quick and easy way." This application is somewhat configurable since it has colors, fonts and letter size to select from.
