. They formed in 1995 originally under the name Divine Child, and released their first self-recorded and published EP Every Seven Minutes in 1998. In March 1999, the band signed a record deal with 6x6 Records and changed their name to Denison Marrs, citing conflicts with existing usages of "Divine Child". The name "Denison Marrs" arose out of a misinterpretation of a Venus and Mars t-shirt one of the band members owned. (Venus and Mars is an alternative clothing store near downtown Orlando, FL.)

Their first full-length album, Holding Hands @ 35,000 Ft, was released in July 1999. Soon after, the band signed with Velvet Blue Music

and released another full-length album, a limited-edition 7", and a split with Stavesacre

. Among growing national popularity, the band then signed with Floodgate Records
