The Delaware Center for Horticulture (DCH) was founded as the Wilmington Garden Center in 1977.

, includes a 1.5 acres (6,070.3 m²) educational demonstration garden, a 3,000 volume lending library, lecture and workshop rooms, and a greenhouse. Seventeen staff members, in addition to various temporary interns and seasonal workers, were supported by more than 600 volunteers in 2008.
DCH’s main programs are the Tree Program, the Education Program, and the Public Landscapes Program. The Tree Program works directly with Wilmington government and residents to improve the City’s tree canopy by inspecting trees, advising residents on their benefits, and arranging for their care or replacement. The Education Program schedules lectures, tours, and workshops for adults and children, partnering with area schools and daycares to involve as many youth as possible, particularly those in underserved communities who would not otherwise have much exposure to horticulture. The Public Landscapes Program, in addition to caring for DCH’s on-site garden, maintains many Wilmington streetscapes and roadsides, and assists in the improvement of public green spaces throughout the state.
