recognizes a first collection of short fiction by a Canadian author writing in English. The award is presented annually by the Writers' Union of Canada

In 2004, the prize purse was raised from $5,000 to $10,000. Two runners-up each receive $500.

The royalties from the sale of Danuta Gleed's short story collection, One of the Chosen, go to the award.
