Danny Stannard, an Irishman who had spent most of his life in southern Africa, succeeded Ken Flower
as head of the Zimbabwean Central Intelligence Organization
under Robert Mugabe
and later became manager of the Zimbabwe cricket team and head of security for the Zimbabwe Cricket Union .
Danny Stannard was in the BSAP and CIO. He was involved in foiling an assassination attempt (possibly more than one) on Mugabe in 1980, for which he later got a medal. He remained a senior CIO officer under the Mugabe government. After retiring from the CIO in 1996 he became manager of the Zimbabwe cricket team for a while.
His brother Richard Stannard
, a former captain in the British Army Military Police, joined the Rhodesian Army shortly before Independence as a Lieftenant Colonel in Public Relations, later becoming OC ZIC (Zimbabwe Intelligence Corps) under Mugabe.
His nephew (also Richard Stannard) was involved in the coup attempt in the Seychelles 25.11.81 (STANNARD, Richard John British special press and propaganda operation in Ulster; Captain in the
