Liedka was first elected to the Village of East Syracuse Board as a Trustee in 2003, and was reelected in 2005. In 2007, he was elected Mayor after being the first candidate in Village history to secure the endorsement of all three active political parties there. Dan is sales manager for DoubleTree Hotel in Syracuse and a sports broadcaster for Time Warner Cable SportsNet, The NHL Network, and ESPN 360.

Campaign for State Senate seat

In 2010, Liedka was a candidate for the Republican nomination to oppose incumbent Democratic State Senator David Valesky in the 49th Senate District, which encompasses all of Madison County and parts of Onondaga, Cayuga and Oneida Counties. Liedka largely based his campaign on both his experience as a Village Board member and the remarkably stable property tax rate during his tenure as Mayor. Liedka lost the primary to Andrew Russo, 36% to 64%.

Village government career

Under Mayor Liedka's leadership, East Syracuse has made progress in reversing decades of of formerly owner-occupied homes turning into rental properties. A 2006 law requires all rental property owners to register their properties and submit to an inspection every one to three years, depending on how many violations were found in the previous inspection. This has cleaned up some of the Village's worst properties. Efforts are currently being made to rehabilitate rental properties and find discounted financing and new home owner education for their buyers.
