Interestingly he averaged exactly a wicket a match in both forms of the game, with 26 wickets from 26 first-class appearances and 48 wickets from 48 one dayers. He never scored a hundred with the bat but managed seven half centuries in first-class cricket to finish with a respectable 1293 runs at 27.51. Van Zyl had his best season in 1995/96 when he scored 332 runs at 33.20 and took eight wickets at 24.50.
