Hoerner was one of the founding members of SDRE, who formed in 1992 as Empty Set. The band recorded a two song demo as Empty Set, then changed their name to Chewbacca Kaboom and recorded a six song demo. Afterwards, the band changed their name to One Day I Stopped Breathing. Later, the band changed their name to SDRE. From the band's founding as Empty Set until the band changed their name from One Day I Stopped Breathing to SDRE, Dan Hoerner was the band's lead vocalist as well as guitarist.
