According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city had a total area of 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²), of which, 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square mile (0.258998811 km²) of it (1.61%) is water.

The city employs three police officers.

April 27, 2011, the Town of Coaling was devistated by an EF-3 tornado around 5:30 a.m. With 2 houses completely destroyed and many more damaged, there were no fatalities.
