Church of the Holy Mother of God of the Mens Monastery
Encyclopedia
The Church of the Holy Mother of God of the Mens Monastery (also known as Arants Vank or Pashavank) was a 14th century Armenian church in Tiflis on the right bank of the Kura river. It was the largest church in Tiflis until it was demolished circa 1930. The church was built in brick in the 14th century, restored in 1480, and more extensively in 1789. The cathedral was the seat of the Armenian archbishop in 1914.

History

The Harants monastery was founded in the 14th century by the grandsons of Baron Umek who came to Tiflis from Karin (Erzerum) in the 13th century.

Architecture

The Church of the Holy Mother of God had a very original design: it was a basilica with three naves of equal width, barrel-vaults under saddle-roofs with three cupolas above the east spans, the central one being higher. The drums were dodecagonal with twelve long windows under blind arches topped by horizontal molding and a row of decorative bricks. The interior was painted by Yovnatan Yovnatavean in 1789.
