 facing term limits, Calvert ran in 1998 to take his seat. He went on to win reelection in 2000, 2002, and 2004. Later on in his term, Calvert served as Chairman of the House Finance Committee, which is responsible for creation of the state budget.

In 2006, Calvert himself faced term limits and was succeeded by the man he himself replaced, Batchelder. Soon after his tenure as a legislator, Ohio Governor Bob Taft
