History

The house was built in 1892-94 by German immigrant and American beer baron Christian Heurich. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places

. The first two floors of the house are preserved intact, and include all of the original furnishings and architectural detail. Landmarks preservation regulations protect the exterior, but not the Eastlake

 interior of the house. In 1955, Heurich's widow deeded the house to the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.. In 2003 the Historical Society moved out of the house, deeding it to the Heurich House Foundation.
