High school career

As a junior, Hines averaged 26 points and 8.5 rebounds per game at Evergreen, Alabama's Hillcrest High School. In his senior year, he averaged 25 points, 12 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. He was named the 2006 Alabama Class 4A Player of the Year and led his team to the 4A State Title; scoring 24 of his teams' 35 points in the title game. For his effort, he was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He too was recognized by the Alabama Sports Writers Association as a member of the state's "Super Five" Team and was runner-up for Alabama's Mr. Basketball

College career

Due to a low ACT score Hines was unable to qualify academically for a Division I school. Thus, he attended Southwestern Illinois College

. In his freshman season he averaged 14 points and 9 rebounds, earning all-region and all-conference recognition. He was named a first-team junior college All-American as a sophomore scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds per game while leading SWIC to the NJCAA National Tournament and Region 24 Title.

Despite not playing a game for Coach Gottfried, who was relieved of his duties in January of 2009, Hines appeared in all 32 games and started the final 14 games of his junior season for Alabama. He averaged 3.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game and following the season was named the teams' Most Improved Player.
