The Chinese Train Control System (CTCS) is a train control system used on railway lines in
Rail transport in the People's Republic of China
Rail transport is the most commonly used mode of long-distance transportation in the People's Republic of China. Almost all rail operations are handled by the Ministry of Railways, which is part of the State Council of the People's Republic of China...

. CTCS is similar to the European Train Control System
European Train Control System
The European Train Control System is a signalling, control andtrain protection system designed to replace the many incompatible safety systems currently used by European railways, especially on high-speed lines.- History :...

 (ETCS).

It has two subsystems: ground subsystem and onboard subsystem. The ground subsystem includes responder, track circuit, wireless communication network (GSM-R
GSM-R
GSM-R, Global System for Mobile Communications - Railway or GSM-Railway is an international wireless communications standard for railway communication and applications. A sub-system of European Rail Traffic Management System , it is used for communication between train and railway regulation...

), and Radio Block Center (RBC). The onboard subsystem includes onboard devices and onboard wireless module.

CTCS has several levels:
  • CTCS-0: Track Circuit
    Track circuit
A track circuit is a simple electrical device used to detect the absence of a train on rail tracks, used to inform signallers and control relevant signals.- Principles and operation :...

     + Cab Signalling
    Cab signalling
Cab signalling is a railway safety system that communicates track status information to the cab, crew compartment or driver's compartment of a locomotive, railcar or multiple unit, where the train driver or engine driver can see the information....

     + ATS
    Automatic Train Stop
An automatic train stop is a system on a train that will automatically stop a train if certain situations happened to prevent accidents from happening....

    ,
  • CTCS-1: Track Circuit + Cab Signalling + ATS,
  • CTCS-2: Track Circuit + Balise
    Balise
A balise is an electronic beacon or transponder placed between the rails of a railway as part of an Automatic Train Protection system. The French word "balise" is used to distinguish these beacons from other kinds of beacon....

     + ATP
    Automatic Train Protection
Automatic Train Protection in Great Britain refers to either of two implementations of a train protection system installed in some trains in order to help prevent collisions through a driver's failure to observe a signal or speed restriction...

, CTCS-2 is functionally equivalent to the European ETCS Level-1.
  • CTCS-3: Balise + GSM-R + ATP, CTCS-3 is functionally equivalent to the European ETCS Level-2.
  • CTCS-4: Balise + GSM-R + ATP, moving block

Levels 2, 3, and 4 are back-compatible with lower levels.
