China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation

The China Foundation of Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) was founded in March 1989. It is a nation-wide Non-Government Organization (NGO) that aims to alleviate poverty in China. It is currently the largest and most influential NGO that specialized in poverty alleviation in China.

The NGO consists of 26 sub-divisions, and an headquarter in Beijing with around 80 staff, whose area of expertise include economics, agriculture, finance, industrial and commercial management, as well as social development.

Mission

The intent of the project is to support communities and individuals living in poverty; improve productivity, healthcare standards and other living standards; achieve poverty alleviation and sustainable social development. More specifically, to
  • Assist poor communities/minority groups in improving their self-reliance capability
  • Improve basic production capability and social service standard
  • Inspire poor individuals to get out of poverty and support themselves
  • Alleviate social diseases and unrest
  • Foster relationships with love and benevolence
  • Foster social harmony

Actions

The CFPA aims to achieve their missions through active donation and outreach project initiatives. Since 1989, the CFPA has a cumulated amount of 2 billion RMB (approximately 315 million USD) and helped over 40 million individuals who lived in poverty.

Microfinance Project

The project targets at helping people who are unable to get credit from banks, especially women. It aims to provide financial support to the poor, increase self-sustainability and independence of the poor and support the development of our organization. The CFPA is also an affiliate of the Mercy Corps. Partnering with banks and founding banking institutions, Mercy Corps facilitates microfinance around the world.)

As of February 2007, CFPA has set up 10 subsidiaries nationwide, managed loans of 68.5million RMB, and had effectively provided assistance to over 21,000 people.

Action 120: Material and Infant Health Project

This project initiated by CFPA in 2007, with the goal of supporting poor mothers and infants, reducing fatality rate of pregnant mothers and infants. The project aims to reach to at least 10 counties by 2010, covering up to 2.5million people.

New Great Wall Project

This project targets the poor tertiary students who consists of 20% of current tertiary student populations. This group of pupils face both financial difficulties and psychological pressure. Through the project, CFPA provide three forms of support to these students:
  • Annual financial aid of 2000 RMB (approximately 330 USD) per person
  • In areas where poor tertiary student density is high, CFPA organises Self-Support Societies to improve the overall capabilities of the students
  • Provide employment training, guidance and assistance to enhance their employability

Disaster Relief Project

Since 2001, CFPA actively seek funds and relief supplies from international organisations, local and overseas enterprises, and as well as the public to support the disaster relief project. Till end of 2006, relief supplies accumulated are worth 170million RMB, relief funds amounted to around 3million RMB; 150million worth of supplies and about 3million RMB has been used to help the poor who are affected by the disaster.
