In late October 1989, sixty parents were notified that the school their children attended was going to close. At a meeting two days later, a consensus arose that the parents must perpetuate a place for their children to receive the specialized teaching they required. Some parents volunteered to steer the new school, and, under the leadership of Keith Bangel, Chesapeake Bay Academy was founded.

Now celebrating its 20th year, the school has served over 1000 families, graduated ten classes from the 12th grade, built and occupied a three-story, 50000 sq ft (4,645.2 m²)., state-of-the-art building, achieved Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) accreditation, and launched The Dominion Education Center to provide supplemental services to additional families throughout Hampton Roads.
