History

Cheltenham station opened on 19 December 1881. There was once a siding on the eastern side of the station at the Melbourne end. The signal box

 is inside the station building, and was installed in 1972, and enables trains to terminate in platform 1. It was upgraded to a Premium Station on 8 March 1996.

On 10 May 2008 Australian actress and singer Jessica Jacobs

 tripped and fell onto the tracks on Platform 2, and was subsequently struck by a train and died instantly from her injuries. As a result of the accident, buses replaced all trains on the Frankston Line for the rest of the day, an indefinite deferred service interruption.

Cheltenham railway station plays a key part in the Cheltenham Major Activity Centre. The station will be the subject of large future developments, including a new station forecourt, with a terraced plaza (to address the heritage listed buildings at the station) and a new taxi rank, similar to that at Mentone railway station.
