 team. At the age of 17 she emerged as one of the UK's best junior archers and came close to selection for the 2004 Summer Olympics

On 11 January 2008, Burgess and her boyfriend – fellow archer Roy Nash – were attacked by a gang of about 25 teenagers. At the time, Burgess and Nash were practising at an indoor Archery Range, located within a Municipal Park in Cheadle, near Stockport, Greater Manchester. Nash attempted to stop the gang damaging his car - they forced him to the ground and began kicking him. Hearing the noise of a bottle being smashed, and fearing that the gang would use this as a weapon to injure Nash further, Burgess came outside and became involved in the incident. She suffered a bruised face and Nash's face and head were also bruised. They were treated for their injuries in Stepping Hill hospital

. Burgess qualified for the European Indoor Championships just days later, on 13 January 2008. Her father said "I'm proud that despite her injuries, she succeeded among the top five women in the country – she was in the top three archers by 1.5 points".

and Folkard, Burgess also took part in the team event. With her 623 score from the ranking round combined with the 651s of Folkard and Williamson the British team was in second position after the ranking round, which gave them a straight seed into the quarter finals. With 201-196 they were too strong for the Japanese team. In the semi final against China they scored 202 points with the Chinese scoring 208, missing out on the final. They were unable to recover in the bronze medal match and lost against France 203-201 to miss out on the medals.
