Champion Bay was named by Captain Stokes of The Beagle who led an expedition to the area in December 1841. He named it after the colonial schooner Champion, in which George Fletcher Moore

had travelled to the region in the preceding year.

Prior to the establishment of the town of Geraldton (and Geraldine prior to that), the land district surrounding was referred to as Champion Bay.
