But in the following years the team performed badly and were relegated all the way down to the 4th division in 1980. In 1984 they came back to the first division, but because of Hooliganism

 by some of Chacarita's fans, the club were suspended for a month and lost 10 points; missing those points, the club couldn't help relegation back to the second division.

The club then moved between second and third division most of the time, until they were promoted back to first division in 1999. After the Clausura 2004, Chacarita returned to second division where they currently play.

May 2008 Chacarita's stadium is currently closed. The reasons for this and when it will reopen are unclear, they currently play their home games at Argentinos Juniors
