Emerald was written for the community version of Compiz (known as compiz-quinnstorm) as a replacement for the previous de facto window decorator for Compiz, gnome-window-decorator (now called gtk-window-decorator), originally written by David Reveman. It includes several different theme engines (among them the "legacy" engine, retained for compatibility with gnome-window-decorator), a utility for theme creation and selection, D-Bus

 based on the compiz-quinnstorm codebase. Now, after the development of Beryl has been discontinued, Emerald is maintained within the Compiz Fusion project.

Recently there has been work in the Compiz Fusion project to create a replacement for emerald, the current leading candidate for which is Jasper, a much more customizable window decorator which supports plugins, scriptable buttons and animation.
