The Center for New Performance is, the professional producing arm of the California Institute of the Arts
. It was established in 1999 as a forum for the creation of ground breaking theatrical performance. Originally named the Center for the New Theater, the name was expanded in 2005 to reflect the broad range of the Center’s interests. Seminal artists from around the world are brought to the CNP to develop work that expands the language, discourse, and boundaries of contemporary theater and performance. The CNP supports a producing model that is artist and project-specific, giving priority to performances that cannot be easily produced in other circumstances—either because of scale of vision or extremity of aesthetic.
CNP fosters the future of the theater by infusing its work with the talent, vitality and impulses of emerging artists in the CalArts community and provides a culmination of the training mission of the California Institute of the Arts by bringing students into a rigorous professional context with international artists of the highest level.
Recent CNP projects include September 11, 2001, by Michel Vinaver, directed by Robert Cantarella, which recently completed a three-city tour of France; Macbeth: A Modern Ecstasy with Stephen Dillane, directed by Travis Preston, which premiered at REDCAT in Los Angeles and recently completed an international tour to London and Australia; Bell Solaris: Twelve Metamorphoses in Piano Theater, composed and performed by David Rosenboom and directed by Travis Preston; Invisible Glass, conceived and directed by Janie Geiser; Peach Blossom Fan, directed by Chen Shi-Zheng; and the 2002 site-specific production of King Lear, directed by Travis Preston, which premiered in Los Angeles at the Brewery and was the centerpiece of the 2003 Frictions Festival in Dijon, France.
CNP is headed by Travis Preston, Artistic Director and Dean of the Theater School; Carol Bixler, Producing Director; Leslie Tamaribuchi, Managing Director; Steven Koplowitz, Dean of the School of Dance; and David Rosenboom, Dean of the School of Music.
