Grammar school

It opened in September 1959 as a grammar school

 with just the first year, gradually increasing year by year. It was administered by Lancashire Education Committee and by 1967 had 780 boys. In 1974 it was taken over by the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale.

Comprehensive

It became a comprehensive in the early 80's.

In December 2000, three sixth formers were jailed at Minshull Street Crown Court for four years each for the robbery of £400 from a Manchester businessman using a replica gun.

Academic performance

It gets GCSE results slightly above average, but at A-level it performs better, receiving the best results in Rochdale LEA.
