 in the municipality of Santa Cruz in the Madeira Islands. It was elevated to city status in 2005. The population in 2001 is 11,586, its density is 965.5/km² and the area is 23 km². Caniço is connected with the urban sprawl of Funchal and like Calheta, Caniço is larger than the seat of the municipality. The city of Funchal is bordered to its west. It is located 6 km E of Funchal. Caniço is surrounded with two streams, a shorter one in the west and a long stream to the east. The main industry are agriculture with some businesses. It is connected with a road linking Funchal, Santa Cruz and Machico

The escarpment which is 5 km long lies to the southwest and shares with the parish of Funchal. The point is the second southernmost point in the island.
