The station first aired on January 14, 1962.

Like its sister stations CIMT and CFTF, CKRT in fact has two transmitters serving Rivière-du-Loup, as the topography of the area leads to poor reception of the main signal in the lower parts of the city. The main signal is on channel 7, while the local repeater (CKRT-TV-3) is on channel 13.

Although privately owned, because CKRT does not have access to alternative non-network program sources (as privately owned English language CBC affiliates do), it operates as a semi-satellite of CBFT
