. Bob Stanley stated, "It was the beginning of indie music. It's hard to remember how underground guitar music and fanzines were in the mid-80s. DIY ethics and any residual punk attitudes were in isolated pockets around the country, and the C86 comp and gigs brought them together". Stanley complied a selection of 1980s era songs that was released as CD86 in 2006, for the original's twentieth anniversary.

Description

CD86 is not merely an expanded re-release of the original C86. Rather, it is an entirely new compilation. Only three of the songs on the original C86 appear on CD86. However, 15 of the original groups on C86 have tracks on CD86. Several tracks were little-known before the albums release.

Reception

Greg Ingber of Prefix gave the compilation good reviews. He notes that over 20 years, the songs have aged very little. He also suggests, that while some might argue that C86 is a mere footnote in pop history, the CD86 compilation suggests that it is much more. Nitsuh Abebe, however, criticized the compilation, calling it disappointing. Abebe feels that "Stanley's set actually runs the risk of convincing old indie-pop kids that the music they spent their youths on wasn't that great." Abebe feels that the compilation's choice were much too narrow in terms of genre and criticizes it for not including unusual tracks like those included in the original C86. Similarly, Nick Hasted calls much of CD86 "indistinguishable and anemic", arguing that it will never have the influence of the original.. However, both Hasted and Abebe contend that the CD had several very good songs.
