History

Bunbury Airport serves the immediate region consisting of the city of Bunbury and the surrounding local authorities of Harvey, Dardanup and Capel, and also provides access to the South West region.

Bunbury Airport is located 8km south-west of the city centre on the South West Highway and is the only airport serving the city. It provides for charter services, general aviation, flight training, recreational aviation, RAAF, RFDS and Department of Environment and Conservation operations.

The City of Bunbury is the owner and operator of Bunbury Airport. Council first investigated the possibility of an airstrip in 1965 and with the help of a band of enthusiastic aviators and input from the Department of Civil Aviation, the airstrip became operational in 1969. It has evolved to present day with council funds, government grants/funds, and operational input from the Bunbury Aero Club. Whilst the airport was designed to achieve licensed aerodrome standards, it is currently not licensed.

With increasing interest in Ultra-light and General Aviation, there is a potential for Bunbury Airport to become a major General Aviation Airport.

Three flying schools operate out of Bunbury Airport, they are: Bunbury Aero Club, Bunbury Flying School and South West Microlight School.
