Founding

The group was formed by Emily Toop on 15th August 2009 at a meeting at The Skiff, Brighton, after discussion on the Brighton New Media and Robot Brighton mailing lists. The hackspace was founded upon the leasing of a room at The Skiff.

Organisational status

BuildBrighton - the incorporated company associated with the Build Brighton Hackspace - is a UK Limited By Guarantee (not-for-profit). It's current directors are Mike Pountney, Toby Cole, and Barney Livingston.

Facilities

Brighton Hackspace facilities include a laser cutter, printer/plotter, PCB etching tools, pillar drill, multiple soldering stations.

Projects

  • Build Brighton was a finalist in the 2011 Great Global Hackspace Challenge, a world-wide competition organised by Mitch Altman

     and Element14. This was achieved with their Phonicubes prototype, a toy designed for under-7s to learn spelling based on the Phonics
