Developed during the 1950s and 1960s, Bryndwr has a higher than usual concentration of state houses and has quite a low socio-economic ranking, in stark contrast with the neighbouring suburbs which are the city's richest.

Aorangi School, a primary school that was closed by the government in early 2010, was located in Bryndwr.
