He gained notoriety for an incident in the South American Under-20s World Cup qualification match against Ecuador where he grabbed an opponents arm and used it to hit his face in an attempt to gain a freekick with Ecuador leading 1–0 (the video of this became "viral" on the internet). The incident, which resulted in a free kick deep on his side's end of the field and no cards issued, didn't have any major role in the match and Ecuador held on to win the match 1–0.
