, Brown's first course specifically in engineering was offered in 1849. The current program was formed in 1916 from the combination of Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering Departments. Engineering was a Division at Brown until 2010 when the university elevated it to its current status as the School of Engineering. In July 2011, Lawrence Larson became the school's inaugural Dean. Prior to this appointment he served as the chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in the Jacobs School of Engineering
