. The church has grown rapidly in the country. In 1955 there were only 3,000 members in Australia; now there are 186 meetinghouses throughout Australia and more than 106,000 members. The Brisbane temple serves 20,000 LDS Church members (Mormons

) in the area. Of the five temples in Australia, four were opened within three years.
A groundbreaking ceremony and site dedication were held 26 May 2001. Construction of the temple, which began in November 2001, took 18 months and cost 11 million dollars. Despite the high price, the temple was built without any debt and was completely funded by members of the church.

A public open house was held 10 May 2003 through 7 June 2003. Those who toured the temple were able to see the beautifully furnished rooms. The temple features painted designs on the walls and ornate light fixtures in every room.

The Brisbane Australia Temple was dedicated on 15 June 2003. LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley

 gave the dedicatory prayer. The 10,700 sq. ft. temple features two ordinance rooms and two sealing rooms.
