He has been head coach at St. Cloud State since 2005. In 2009 he was given a six-year contract extension through the 2014-2015 season.

A 1987 graduate of St. Cloud State University (SCSU), Motzko was a two-year varsity letterwinner for the SCSU hockey team from 1984-86. Motzko began his coaching career in 1986-87 as an assistant coach for the legendary Herb Brooks
