Blackburn Lake Primary School is located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne approximately fifteen (15) kilometres from the metropolitan city centre. The school location itself is off main roads and adjacent to the natural environment of the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary. The school site is heavily treed and has been recognised as a ‘Land for Wildlife’ property in view of its unique setting and in recognition of the school’s commitment and sensitivity to the maintenance of the school as a haven for indigenous flora and fauna.

Enrolments have been increasing over the past 5 years with some 450 students in attendance. The central Blackburn area, from where most of our students come, continues to undergo demographic change as many older families are selling their residential properties and younger families with school-age children are buying into the area. The school has an attractive physical appearance, with a large part of the school being rebuilt in 1999 and a recent upgrade of flexible learning spaces in our multi-purpose room. The 2011 school year welcomed the completion of a $3 million ‘state of the art’ multi-purpose centre construction as part of the ‘ Building the Education Revolution’ government funding -incorporating a full size basketball court, canteen and Music Room.

Blackburn Lake Primary School has a Student Family Occupation (SFO) density of 0.21, indicating that the school is relatively socially economic advantaged. The school enrolment consists largely of children from middle class families of Anglo-Celtic origin. Some 30% of year six students annually transition to non-government schools for their secondary education. Only 8.4% of students receive the Educational Maintenance Allowance.

Autumnfest

Every year in March or April the school holds its annual fair named Autumnfest. This is the major fundraiser at the school for the year. At this event there is rides, food and drink, auctions and lots of stalls.
