 is a former professional footballer. A forward, he appeared for Sunderland in the 1973 FA Cup Final winning team, taking the corner kick that led to the winning goal. Billy joined Sunderland in February 1966, and played 304 games for Sunderland scoring 79 goals. He was very highly regarded by Sunderland supporters of the day. Don Revie the manager of Leeds said he was one of the most exciting footballers in the UK. He was a very hard working winger and centre forward when called on.

Billy Hughes was a Scotland international, playing (substitute) against Sweden in 1975. He left Sunderland to join Derby County

 in August 1977, and was transferred to Leicester City in December 1977. He played 17 (+2) matches for Derby, scoring 8 goals, and played 36 (+1) league matches for Leicester, scoring 5. His contract with Leicester was cancelled in April 1980. He played 5 league matches for Carlisle on loan in September and October 1979.

His brother John Hughes (footballer born 1943) played for Celtic and Crystal Palace and was a Scotland international. He was transferred to Sunderland in January 1973 and made his debut against Millwall later that month. Unfortunately he was injured on his debut after just 15 minutes, and he had to retire due to the injury.
