might be less electable because the press might wonder if Obama, who is black, had sold drugs in college. (Obama had acknowledged using drugs when he was younger, describing it as a mistake.) "It'll be, 'When was the last time? Did you ever give drugs to anyone? Did you sell them to anyone?'" he said.

Shaheen apologized later that day, and reiterated his apology in his resignation the next day. The comments were not authorized by the campaign, and Clinton personally apologized to Obama the next day. Shaheen had served on the campaign since March 2007.
