Hewes graduated from the University of Toronto
in 1944 with degree in occupational therapy.
She was an Alderwoman in the City of Edmonton from 1974 until 1984. From 1964 to 1967, she was the Executive Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Director of the Edmonton Social Planning Council From 1967 to 1974, and Chairman of the Board of Canadian National Railway
from 1984 to 1985 (first woman to chair the board of CN).
Hewes was elected as a Liberal
