History

Beta Sigma Zeta Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 4, 1999 at the State University of New York at Cobleskill (SUNY Cobleskill) by two extraordinary women, Vida T. Byrd- Davis and Charlene D. Powell. Originally these woman wanted to join other Greek Lettered Organizations but they were unable to find one that would allow them to express themselves freely without having to fit any stereotypes, so they decided to start their own. They researched letters, colors, jewels, flowers and mascots hoping to find a glimpse of themselves in each.

Multiculturalism is something both women held near to their hearts since they were both women with diverse family backgrounds. The idea of having a Sorority that would accentuate the diversity of its members with the focus of community service was their main goal.

With their determination to improve their communities as well as further spread their message they were able to expand their sisterhood beyond just one chapter, on August 30, 2008 the sisters of Beta Sigma Zeta Sorority, Inc. welcomed the Beta Chapter at Borough of Manhattan Community College and the Gamma Chapter the Katherine Gibbs School. Then, on June 26, 2009 they welcomed the Delta Chapter at SUNY Westchester Community College and the Epsilon Chapter at Monroe College. With the inception of these new chapters the women of Beta Sigma Zeta Sorority, Inc. believe there are no limits to what they can or will accomplish.

Shirley N. Nimako Research Foundation

On November 13th 2010, A member of the sorority passed away from Paraneoplastic Anti-NMDA Receptor Encephalitis, a rare disease that attacks the brain and the neurological system. The death truly made Beta Sigma Zeta more aware of the disease, it then became a priority to spread awareness and support research in memory of the member. Through donations and assistance, the foundation raised awareness, educated medical professionals and their colleagues, as well as inform the public about the disease.
