Beta Epsilon Gamma Gamma Alpha Rho Sigma (ΒΕΓΓΑΡΣ), established December 20, 1923, is the oldest Jesuit fraternity in the United States. The Beggars Fraternity of Loyola University New Orleans holds the distinction of being the first social fraternity at a Jesuit University. Remaining true to their core values, the Beggars have maintained local status and exist exclusively at Loyola New Orleans. Moreover, such deeply rooted traditions have guaranteed the sustained involvement of Beggars alumni.

Contributions

The Men of Beggars have been an integral part of the campus since their founding in 1923. Both the school’s newspaper and the Student Government Association were started by the Beggars. In addition, the flag pole in front of Biever Hall, the stained glass window in Marquette Hall and the tile mosaic on the library were all donated to the school by the fraternity and their alumni.

Purpose

Beggars Fraternity is the oldest social fraternity at Loyola University (founded in 1923). It is devoted to the promotion of brotherhood among its members as well as their spiritual, academic, and social betterment, and also that of the entire Loyola community.

Membership

The Beggars Fraternity holds its membership to be an exclusive invitation requiring unanimous approval by the entire fraternity and therefore does not operate on quotas.
