The station opened on 15 July 1884 as Vækkerø. It changed name to Bestum on 15 August 1890, and to Bestun on 1 September 1922. It was closed in 1978.

The first station building was drawn by Georg Andreas Bull, but it was removed during the interwar period and re-erected at the Norwegian Railway Museum. A new station building, which still stands, was drawn by Eivind Gleditsch and completed in 1918.
