Sailing

The following year in 1982, again at short notice, he embarked on an Atlantic crossing aboard Sea Falcon, the boat of the famous English sailor and navigator, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston

The change of profession to yacht brokerage

The tipping point for Bernard Gallay came during the 1992/1993 Vendee Globe

. Whilst racing in difficult conditions and having struggled to gather sponsors, he began to ponder and reflect; par for the course on any solo voyage. Among the participants, he noticed the boat of the British, Nigel Burgess

, who disappeared in the early stages of the race. Nigel Burgess started the race with a boat which bore his own name and logo of his own company, Burgess Yachts, which is now one of the finest Yacht Brokerage brands in the world. Bernard Gallay also wanted to use his sailing experience as the foundation to begin another project that would allow him to draw on his knowledge whilst maintaining his passion for the sea. He thus created Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage (BGYB) in 1994 a year after his return and aimed to start the business while continuing to race. For a long time he has worked with a small team and it was only after his second Vendee Globe in 2000/2001 and the Transat 6.50 in 2005 that he decided to draw a line under his racing career and concentrate entirely on developing BGYB. Convinced that all the qualities of a sailor and an entrepreneur are closely linked (anticipation, bravery, perseverance) he is focused on the international development of BGYB. With close relationships with seasoned sailors, former racers and yacht captains such as, Philippe Monnet (BGYB Monaco), Thierry Barot (BGYB Hong Kong), Jean-Yves Candlot (BGYB Palma de Mallorca), Oscar Konyukhov (BGYB Moscow), François Boucher (BGYB Paris), Nicolas Marchand (BGYB Montpellier) and Stéphane Della (BGYB La Ciotat) he has been able to do this.
