Ben started his career at the age of 12, playing a lead in the Musical Seven Little Australians for a year run at the Footbridge Theatre. Off the back of this he signed to a management company and worked in film, television, commercials, and theatre while he completed his education. One month after receiving his Higher School Certificate, Ben had the role of bad boy Jesse written for him after auditioning for another role on the TV series Home and Away.

held in 1997, Unwin was nominated for the Logie for Most Popular New Talent for his work on Home and Away.

Ben's character had been sent to city jail pending court for the manslaughter of his love/r in a drunk driving car accident in 2005 just outside Summer Bay.

Ben has appeared in numerous Australian TV adverts most notable being his Coke advert riding a camel across the desert.

Ben is currently studying for a law degree in Sydney.
