Hilfenhaus has missed out on playing in the Australian Cricket Team on so many different occasions but most recently named in the 13 man squad to play in the 2nd 3 Mobile Test at the MCG against The South African Cricket Team 08/09 Season. He flew to Melbourne to spend Christmas Day with The Australian Cricket Team but did not get in the team so he flew back to Tasmania for Boxing Day. The Last 3 Mobile Test Came around where yet again he was named in the 13 Man squad to take on South Africa at the SCG. However he was made 12th man when Doug Bollinger

2009 Ashes onwards

Hilfenhaus was given a chance in the 2009 ashes after a solid performance in South Africa and an injury to Brett Lee. He grabbed his chance, swinging the new and old ball, along with bowling an accurate length. Though Australia lost the series 2–1, Hilfenhaus was the leading wicket-taker for either side with 22 dismissals from all five Tests at an average of 27.45.
