. The population was 1,288 at the 2000 census. Barrackville was founded in 1767 by William "Indian Billy" Ice and named in honor of an early settler, John Barrack. It was incorporated January 25, 1968.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older.
