. The organisation has adapted and grown from one that focused on nursing care for older people to one that has developed expertise in other care areas.

Services include dementia care, assisted living and supported living. The company also provides support for younger people with physical disabilities, autistic spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, acquired brain injury and neurological disability across a care pathway.

Barchester has created Memory Lane Communities around the UK. These communities are dedicated person-centred dementia care facilities.

Since 1996, Barchester has grown from 12 to over 200 care homes through over 40 acquisitions and new build developments. In October 2004, Barchester Healthcare acquired Westminster Health Care for £525 million, creating the fourth biggest independent healthcare provider in the UK.

Employing more than 14,000 staff, Barchester Healthcare is the only care provider listed in the Sunday Times Top 25 Big Companies To Work For 2010. This is an award voted for by staff. Barchester was placed on the same list in 2006 and 2009.

Operations

Barchester Healthcare has a central office in Chelsea Harbour, London. The company also has offices in Berkhamstead, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Inverness.

Each care home is run by a general manager, supported by a regional operations director. At a central level, homes are supported by teams with expertise in operations, marketing, hotel services, human resources, quality assurance, interior design, IT, training and financial support.

Barchester Healthcare also operates Richmond Care Villages, a company that runs retirement village communities.

There is a flagship Barchester home in the Republic of Ireland, Knightsbridge Retirement Village in Trim, Co Meath. The Irish home offers a range of services: nursing care, residential care, dementia care, supported and assisted living accommodation.

Learning and Development

Barchester offers a number of apprenticeships and National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) through the Barchester Academy. These NVQs cover a wide range of skills: care, dementia care, administration, learning & development, team leading, management, customer service, hospitality and housekeeping. The academy has a national contract with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

The Barchester Business School runs Management Programmes, which give trainees the opportunity to earn a certificate diplomas as well as Bachelors and Masters level qualifications.

All the learning and development programmes are nationally accredited.

Charitable Foundation

The Barchester Healthcare Foundation is an independent registered charity supporting older people and other adults with disabilities. The Foundation awards grants to individuals who cannot obtain sufficient state funding. The charity’s objective is to promote practical solutions that lead to self-sufficiency and independence.

The Barchester Healthcare Foundation has a mix of company and independent trustees who have experience working with older people and those with disabilities; within private health care, the public and voluntary sectors including research into ageing and advisory services to the government.

Barchester homes fundraise for the foundation during the annual Barchester Foundation Week in May and other fundraising events throughout the year.
