. It has currently one campus in Dhanmondi,Dhaka. The College is affiliated with the Dhaka University as a constituent college since 10 May 1988.

History

Bangladesh Medical College is one of the finest medical institutions in Bangladesh.It is the first non govt. medical college in the country.The batches of BMC are designated as BM(Best Medicos).It was established in 1986 by a group of dedicated people called the founder members who were imbued with the ideals of providing quality medical education, research and services to people of this country at reasonable cost. The College and the Hospital are run by Bangladesh Medical Studies and Research Institute (BMSRI) which is a non political and non profitable organisation. The members of the Institute are not entitled to any remuneration or dividends.

Date of commencement of classes of first batch was 1 July 1987.

Currently Bangladesh Medical College & Hospital has 6 buildings.

The objectives of the Institute are

1. To promote and provide studies in medical science leading to recognized graduate and postgraduate degrees.
2. To conduct research work on the diseases prevalent in the country
3. To conduct research on medical education with the aim of raising the standard of medical education in the country
4. To provide skilled manpower in the medical, nursing and paramedical fields
5. To provide quality medical care and health services to people at reasonable cost
The establishment of a medical college imparting medical education leading to recognized medical degree was taken as the first and foremost aim of the Institute. Through the tireless efforts of the Founder Members the dream was realized against much opposition when permission was accorded by the Government of Bangladesh for the creation of the College on 13 April 1986.
Bangladesh Medical College started functioning from 24 April 1986. The Dhaka University granted affiliation to the College on 10 May 1988. Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council has recognized the College. The first batch of students from the College appeared in the 1st Professional MBBS Examination of the Dhaka University held in March 1990 after completing two years of prescribed course of studies. The College has been enlisted in the World Directory of Medical Schools effective 1986 published by the World Health Organization which entitles the graduates of BMC recognition all over the world. Graduates of BMC are eligible for limited registration with the General Medical Council of United Kingdom. They are also eligible to take the United States Medical License Examination (USMLE). Now the college has a new 6 storied academic building with adequate parking facilities. It has now been possible to accommodate most of the departments in more spacious place.
The attached Hospital is a tertiary care referral medical facility and provides excellent training to students and junior doctors. The Hospital has arrangements for 500 inpatients. It is well equipped and provides quality health care to the public at reasonable cost. The entire hospital staff is dedicated to excellence and service.

About College

The College is recognised by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council(BMDC) since 1986. BMC has been enlisted in the World Directory of Medical Schools effective 1986 published by World Health Organisation which entitles the graduates of BMC recognition all over the world. Graduates of BMC are eligible for limited registration with the General Medical Council of United Kingdom. They are also eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination. ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Student Teaching

All Assistant and Associate Professors teach students who are placed in the wards, everyday in the morning. Students are placed in small groups of 8 students which improve the teacher- student interaction. Student teaching in the morning is primarily done by Faculty Members. Registrars teach students in the evening session. Students are required to complete their cards before being allowed to take the MBBS final professional examinations.

Post Graduate Teaching

Regular postgraduate teaching is imparted to Registrars, Assistant Registrars and Interns with regard to theory, diagnosis and management of patients. Registrars and Assistant Registrars are encouraged to attend teaching sessions in class rooms and wards. Complicated cases are routinely discussed with them with a view to training them in the management of patients. Assistant Registrars have hands on training with regard to management of patients. The Intensive Care Unit and the Coronary Care Unit serve as ideal points for teaching on critically ill patients.
Journal Club and Radiology Meeting
Journal Club and Radiology Meeting are held in clinical departments once weekly and are attended by all members of the Department. Papers are read by the members of the Faculty, interns and junior doctors and important journals are regularly covered. Important X-rays, MRI and CT scans are discussed by Radiologists. Seminars
Seminars and Clinical Meetings are held on a regular basis. Presentations are made by distinguished speakers from the College, from other medical institutions in Bangladesh and outside the country.

Morning Session

Daily discussion meetings are held every morning department wise with Interns, Assistant Registrars and Faculty Members. Interesting cases that are admitted the previous day are presented in detail by the Interns and the Assistant Registrars along with the Consultant on call for the day. Symptoms, physical signs, diagnosis, investigations like X-rays, ECG and laboratory tests are discussed in detail along with management plans. The Morning Session is well attended and is an excellent teaching and learning session for all.

FACILITIES FOR TRAINING

Teaching Staff

All departments have well qualified members in their teaching staff, trained in Bangladesh, United Kingdom, United States and other countries. The management and the teaching staff are highly motivated and sincerely interested in optimal patient care, and in the teaching of medical students and junior doctors. Excellent and intensive supervision is provided to them.

Inpatients

This consists of non- paying male and female beds, paying beds, and cabins for patients to be admitted. The College and Hospital have a well organised system of Interns, Assistant Registrars and Registrars in training positions. Admission of patients cover a wide range of pathology giving excellent exposure for training. All admissions are covered by Assistant Professors and above. Morning and evening rounds, as well as weekend rounds are conducted by them on a regular basis. In addition, they come to the Hospital when they are called even during odd hours. Patient care is supported by adequate radiology and pathology services for investigations.
Intensive Care Unit/ Coronary Care Unit/ Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Intensive Care Unit has 8 beds and critically ill patients are routinely admitted with a high percentage of bed occupancy. The Coronary Care Unit has 8 beds. The list of patients include shock, coronary heart disease, respiratory and liver failure, patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, septic patients and other critically ill surgical, obstetrics/ gynaecological patients. The ICU and the CCU regularly receive referrals from BIRDEM, Dhaka Medical College and other Institutions in Bangladesh. They are well equipped with ventilators, cardiac monitors, CVP lines and monitoring, pulse oximeter, lung function test machine and are staffed by physicians 24 hours a day throughout the year. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has 3 incubators and ventilator for the management of critically ill newborns.

Outpatients

The Hospital has a busy Outpatient Department. Patients may obtain consultation at a minimal charge. There is also a fast track system through which patients may be seen by a consultant of choice, immediately, on payment of a higher charge. There is an evening shift that starts at 3pm and is open till 9pm on all working days.

Emergency

The Hospital has a fully functioning Emergency Department that provides coverage during the evening, night and during holidays. It has its own set of doctors who are free to seek help from other services.
